What started off as a idea being thrown around on a band bus in 2009 has become a major event in the north east pipe band calendar.
In October 2010 we launched the concerts with a fantastic performance from Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band. This saw Boghall take the stage to perform some of there most noted and celebrated sets such as the iconic ‘Call to the Gathering’. It also saw Bucksburn putting its Novice Juvenile and Grade 2 bands on stage. We welcomed Paul Ritchie to the stage to perform some tracks from his debut album. The success of the night was a credit to the Pipe Majors of both bands, Robert Stewart & Ross Walker, without whom this would never have been possible.
In 2012 we brought Inveraray and District to Aberdeen in a fantastic pre season concert that was to be their first full length concert. The evening was a fantastic display of what can be achieved by teaching. An very technical performance was delivered by both bands and some very fitting tributes were delivered to many of those that helped shape both organisations over the years. The personalities of both Pipe Majors, Neil Selbie & Stuart Liddell, shone through in the style and content that their respective bands took onto the stage.
This year we have taken on an even bigger challenge in bringing former world champions St Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band to the north east in what we hope will be another excellent concert. SLOT are a well – established concert band having performed at the annual ‘Pre Worlds’ concert twice in 4 years.
What’s next? To be honest we don’t know yet. We have a few ideas, but given the calibre of bands we have attracted over the last few years its going to be very hard to equal let alone surpass them. One thing we can assure you of is that the show will go on and we will continue to pursue these events to help ensure that the art of traditional piping and drumming is kept alive in the North East of Scotland.
